Commencing with a list of Council members present: Major-General John Theophilus Boileau; Warren De La Rue; Captain Frederick John Owen Evans; Edward Frankland; Albert Gunther; Thomas Henry Huxley; Thomas Wharton Jones; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Daniel Oliver; Lyon Playfair; William Pole; Bartholomew Price; Warington Wilkinson Smyth; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of John Higginbottom. The Treasurer reported that he had invested £5,500 in reduced 3 per cent consols. List of candidates for Fellowship to be recommended to the Royal Society for election and the annual meeting for the purpose to be held on 1 June. Letter from James Hector, 7 Westminster Chambers, Victoria Street, London, 4 April 1876, to Joseph Dalton Hooker, full text entered into the minutes: following from their conversation on a regular series of magnetic observation in New Zealand, he had addressed the Government on the subject, and he only has to ascertain the cost of instruments, which he estimates at £80; he suggests that it might be possible to have instruments on loan from the Royal Society and asks for an expression of opinion on whether there should be at least one continuous instrument station in New Zealand, which might be useful to British meteorologists via cable; the subject referred to the Kew Committee for suggestions. List of bills for payment, for printing and other expenses.
