DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Major-General John Theophilus Boileau; Warren De La Rue; Captain Frederick John Owen Evans; Edward Frankland; Albert Gunther; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Reverend Robert Main; William Pole; Warington Wilkinson Smyth; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The Reverend W.B. Clarke and Mr. C. Meldrum were granted extensions of time for admission into the Fellowship. £50 placed with Mr. Le Neve and £30 with Mr. Carruthers for the benefit of applicants to the Scientific Relief Fund. Letter from Mr. Meldola concerning remuneration for his services to the Eclipse Expedition, the matter referred to the Eclipse Committee and the Treasurer. Leave granted to F.M. Balfour to take 250 copies of plates from his paper on spinal nerves of Selachians, at his own expense. Mr. Lockyer stated that his report on the Eclipse Expedition would be delivered next November. The Royal Society seal was affixed to a power of attorney to receive India stock dividends. List of candidates for Royal Society Medals, with proposers and seconders and a brief citation. A committee formed to draw up a memorial to the Government on the provisions of the Bill for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, limiting it to the recommendations of the Royal Commission. Letter from G. Kennedy, the Society's Porter, referred to the House Committee. Resolved that power be given to the Meteorological Committee to report to the Treasury Committee. All books belonging to the Library to be returned by 31 July. Leave of absence granted to the Assistant Secretary. The Treasurer authorised to pay bills during recess. List of bills for payment, for printing, advertising, and for other services.
