Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Couch Adams; Major-General John Theophilus Boileau; Warren De La Rue; Captain Frederick John Owen Evans; Edward Frankland; Albert Gunther; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Daniel Oliver; William Pole; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Dr. Henry Wyldebore Rumsey and Sir Francis Shuckburgh. List of President, Officers and Council to be recommended at the Anniversary Meeting for service in the ensuing year; the list to be communicated by the Assistant Secretary to the public papers. Nomination of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals, with citations: the Copley Medal awarded to Professor Claude Bernard; a Royal Medal to William Froude; a Royal Medal to Sir Charles Wyville Thomson; the Rumford Medal to Pierre Julius Cesar Janssen. Resolved, on the recommendation of the Eclipse Committee, that the Royal Society pay for the P. and O. Steamship Company passage of Professor Tacchini and his assistant and the account to be sent to the Foreign Office to offset against the claim by the Italian Government, with a letter explaining Council's actions. List of salaries and wages paid to Royal Society Officers and Staff. List of bills for payment for printing, binding, siderostat cleaning and for Library books.
