Commencing with a list of Council members present: Major-General John Theophilus Boileau; Warren De La Rue; Peter Martin Duncan; Willam Henry Flower; Edward Frankland; Francis Galton; William Augustus Guy; John Russell Hind; Thomas Henry Huxley; Reverend Robert Main; William Pole; Admiral George Henry Richards; Henry John Stephen Smith; William Spottiswoode; Balfour Stewart; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Robert Christopher Nisbet Hamilton. J.W. Mallet and H.B. Medlicott granted extensions for admission to the Fellowship. The proposal to repeal Section 5 Chapter 3 of the Statutes balloted and agreed. Professor W.C. Williamson appointed to deliver the Bakerian Lecture. The paper by Dr. Sanderson and F.J.M. Page on excitation of the leaf of Dionea muscipula appointed as the Croonian Lecture. Candidates for Royal Society Medals proposed and seconded, with citations. Emil Dubois-Reymond added to the names of candidates for Foreign Membership of the Royal Society. Nominations of candidates for Foreign Membership listed and to be put to the ballot at a future meeting of Council. Report of the Meteorological Council Nomination Committee read, proposing Henry Smith, Warren De La Rue, Francis Galton, George Gabriel Stokes and General Strachey; the question was agreed upon their withdrawal from discussions. Letter from George Gabriel Stokes, the Royal Society, 15 June 1877, to the Treasury, full text entered into the minutes: with modifications to the proposals for a Meteorological Council, including expanding the number of representatives and utilising £1,000 in the present year, forwarding the Royal Society Council minute on the subject and noting the nominations to the new Council. Harrison and Sons' tender for printing Royal Society publications accepted. Letter from Science and Art Department, South Kensington, 8 June 1877, to the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: transmitting memorials from the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Irish Academy. Letter from J.H. Balfour, Edinburgh, 27 February 1877, to the Lord President of the Science and Art Department, London, full text entered into the minutes: on the annual grant of £4,000 for the purposes of scientific research, with suggestions on its administration. Letter from John K. Ingram, Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin, 28 April 1877, to the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, full text entered into the minutes: on the Government Fund and representation for scientists from Scotland and Ireland on the Grant Committee. The Officers were requested to reply to the letter from the Committee of Council for Education, to correct erroneous statements. All books belonging to the Library to be returned and none given out during August. Leave of absence granted to the Assistant Secretary. The Treasurer authorised to pay bill during recess. Loan of plates to Taylor and Francis for a reprint of Faraday's experimental researches. List of bill for payment, for printing, colouring of plates and for other expenses.
