DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Frederick Augustus Abel; William Carruthers; William Crookes; Peter Martin Duncan; William Henry Flower; George Carey Foster; John Russell Hind; Thomas Henry Huxley; John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Henry John Stephen Smith; William Spottiswoode; Balfour Stewart; George Gabriel Stokes; Allen Thomson; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Dr. W. Farr subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. The Secretary reported the death of Dr. William Stokes. Treasurer reported that the Davy Medal dies had been deposited at the Royal Mint, with the Deputy Master, who would strike medals for Bunsen and Kirchoff without delay. Letter from Few and Company, 19 Surrey Street, Strand (Victoria Embankment), London, 14 January 1878, to the Secretary, the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: enclosing a copy of Mr. Martin's certificate as security for a £15,000 mortgage to W.H. Long, noting the net income of the property and stating that the security is an excessive one; with text of the certificate by Marcus Martin, Lincoln's Inn. Treasurer presented a power of attorney for the sale on consol stock, the seal of the Royal Society affixed to it. A further sum of £100 granted from the Donation Fund in aid of publication of the Naturalist's Reports on the Natural History of Rodriguez and Kerguelen. £50 from the Donation Fund to be placed with John Evans, in aid of Mr. A. Everett for a proposed exploration of the caves of Borneo, and possible palaeontological and anthropological discoveries. Letter from the Treasury enclosing Captain Feilden's reports [incomplete].
