DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Bowman; William Benjamin Carpenter; William Carruthers; William Crookes; Arthur Farr; George Carey Foster; John Russell Hind; Thomas Henry Huxley; John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Allen Thomson; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Dr. W.J. Russell appointed a member of the Scientific Relief Committee. A printed list of contributors to the Publication Fund was presented, this to be sent to every Fellow of the Royal Society. Letter from the Clerk of the Louth Union asking if the Society would sell part of the Mablethorpe Estate for conversion into a sewage farm: Smith Son and Oakley instructed to visit and report to Council on the matter. Letter from the Treasury acknowledging the receipt of the Meteorological Council's report. Sir Henry Lefroy appointed a member of the Kew Committee. Report of the Kew Committee submitted to Proceedings for printing. Letters of thanks received from Messrs. Boussinggault, Cornu, Cailletet and Pictet. Council examined a collection of 973 portraits formed by J.P. Gassiot and these were ordered to be purchased.
