Commencing with a list of Council members present: Frederick Augustus Abel; William Bowman; William Carruthers; Major-General Henry Clerk; William Crookes; John Evans (Treasurer); Sir William Robert Grove; Augustus George Vernon Harcourt; Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Sir Henry Lefroy; James Lindsay, Lord Lindsay; Sir John Lubbock; Charles William Siemens; John Simon; George Gabriel Stokes; Allen Thomson; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Baron John Benjamin Heath, Thomas Sopwith, John Waterhouse and Bennet Woodcroft. Lord Lindsay made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Seal of the Royal Society affixed to the transfer of stock and a power of attorney for sale of £1,000 of the Jodrell Fund. Treasurer announced a bequest of £1,000 from the late Sydney Ellis of Leicester and was authorised to invest this in consols. The Scientific Relief Committee granted an award of £100 to an applicant recommended by the President. Report of the Estates Committee read and adopted, £300 placed at their disposal. List of names added to the candidates for Foreign Membership of the Royal Society: after balloting, Arthur Auwers, Luigi Cremona, Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages, Georg Hermann Quincke, Theodor Schwann, and Jean Servais Stas were nominated to be put to the ballot at a future meeting. The Colliery Explosions Committee had recommended, via the President, the names of scientists to sit on a Royal Commission. Report of the Government Grant Committee, presented as minutes of the meeting of 19 February 1879, full text entered into the minutes: including election of representatives. Letter from Norman McLeod, Science and Art Department, London, 12 February 1879, to the Secretary, the Royal Society, Burlington House, full text entered into the minutes: noting that recommendations for non-personal payments should not exceed £2,375. Lists of Government Grant applications from individuals, with brief summaries of research projects and amounts requested, allocated for consideration to Government Grant Sub-Committees A-C: lists of the recommendations of Sub-Committees A-C, with various amendments proposed and discussed and a final set of amended appropriations. Minutes of the meeting of the Government Grant Committee, 20 February 1879, full text entered into the minutes: lists of applications presented and grants made, provisionally and after revision. £20 from the Donation Fund granted to Messrs. Morrison and Marsden and £50 granted to J. Snodgrass. Thomas Henry Huxley appointed to the governing body of Eton College. Leave granted to William Crookes to have electrotypes from his paper on electrical insulation in vacua. Donation of two guineas granted to the parochial school at Mablethorpe. List of bills for payment, for lithography, engraving, printing and for other expenses.
