DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Frederick Augustus Abel; William Carruthers; Major-General Henry Clerk; William Crookes; John Evans (Treasurer); Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Sir Henry Lefroy; John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh; John Simon; George Gabriel Stokes; Allen Thomson; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Isaac Fletcher, Charles Murchison and Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. Treasurer announced the bequest of £1,500 by Sir Walter Trevelyan. £30 from the Donation Fund awarded to Sir William Thomson towards the cost of a machine for solving simultaneous linear equations, The manuscript of John Aubrey's Natural History of Wiltshire loaned to the British Museum for one month on the application of Mr. Carruthers. Letter from Fleeming Jenkin suggesting that a portion of the Government Grant might be applied to the repayment of expenses incurred in independent research: Professor Jenkin to be informed that present regulations did not preclude this and the substance of this resolution to be passed to the Government Grant Sub-Committees for inclusion in the circular to applicants. Letter from the tenant at Mablethorpe asking for a reduction in rent referred to the Treasurer. On the recommendation of the Estates Committee, land at Acton might be let for building purposes on 99-year leases. Seal of the Royal Society affixed to Foreign Membership diplomas. Tereasurer gave notice that he would suggest changes to Sections XVII, XVIII and XIX of the Statutes, on the keeping of a book of suggestions for Foreign Members and on the procedure for election. List of candidates for Copley, Royal and Davy Medals, to be proposed, seconded and adjuducated at a future meeting. List of bills to be paid, including residual salary of H.B. Wheatley, with a gratuity.
