Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Busk; Arthur Cayley; Major-General Henry Clerk; Edwin Dunkin; John Evans (Treasurer); Augustus George Vernon Harcourt; Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Sir Henry Lefroy; Alfred Newton; William Odling; Sir James Paget; William Henry Perkin; John Simon; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Edward William Cooke and Dr. William Budd. Mr. Busk and Professor Cayley made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath, as new Members of Council. Authority given to the Soiree Committee to make preparations for receptions and soirees. Report of the Estates Committee: resolved that the footpath along Newton Avenue be paved with York stone at a cost not exceeding £300; Smith, Son and Oakley to arrange a mutual agreement with Mr. Beaumont on laying out of land abutting the North and South Junction Railway. Repeal of the concluding part of Statute II Chapter XI, giving Council power to determine Ordinary Meeting times. £100 from the Scientific Relief Fund placed in the hands of Professor Balfour Stewart on behalf of an applicant. Government Grant Sub-Committees A-C with lists of members and chairmen: the committees charged with examining the whole of the applications before them. Letter from Mrs. J.A. Broun, donating a gravimeter under the will of her late husband. Permission for Professor Prestwich to withdraw map 2 of his paper on the parallel roads of Lochabar: and for others to have electrotypes of illustrations, and for Mr. Heelis to read Canon Moseley's paper on glaciers. £15 15s., to Messrs. Dyte and Stead for services as accountants, their services to be retained. List of bills for payment for lithograph and for picture cleaning and repairs.
