Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Busk; Major-General Henry Clerk; Edwin Dunkin; John Evans (Treasurer); Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; John Whitaker Hulke;Thomas Henry Huxley; William Odling; Sir James Paget; William Henry Perkin; Charles William Siemens; John Simon; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Professor Benjamin Peirce. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended to the Anniversary Meeting for election in the ensuing year: the list to be communicated to the public papers by the Assistant Secretary. Nomination of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the Copley Medal awarded to James Joseph Sylvester; Royal Medals awarded to Joseph Lister and Captain Andrew Noble; the Rumford Medal to William Huggins; the Davy Medal to Charles Friedel. The President added to the list of the Transit of Venus Committee. Letter from Sir Charles Wyville Thompson, Bonsyde, Linlithgow, 2 November 1880, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: requesting that the Royal Society solicit the Admiralty for a vessel to undertake marine biological and physical survey work from the north of Scotland to the Faroe and Shetland Islands; explaining his reasons and noting results from the voyages of Porcupine, Challenger, and Knight Errant, promising that specimens of abyssal fauna would be lodged with the British Museum; the letter to be laid before the Admiralty. The Academy of Sciences in Brelin to be furnished with a list of Newton-Leibnitz letters and copies of leter to and from Leibnitz, with a committee formed to supervise. Extension of time for admission to the Fellowship granted to the Bishop of Limerick and to Professor Emerson Reynolds. Report of the Library Committee read and adopted, with a list of grants of journals. Leave to have electrotypes and blocks of illustrations granted to various individuals. Treasurer reported on purchase of stock for the fee reduction fund. List of salaries and wages paid to Officers and Staff.
