Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Busk; Major-General Henry Clerk; Edwin Dunkin; John Evans (Treasurer); Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Sir James Paget; William Henry Perkin; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie and Dr Edwin Guest. Report of the Auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Report of the Kew Committee ordered to be printed in Proceedings. Mr. Marshall to be appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee. Mr. J.S. Budgett of Stoke Park, Guildford, reported to have given £100 towards the cost of publishing plates of Mr. W.K. Parker's papers, thanks given. Minutes of the Transit of Venus Committee read, an excerpt to be used to answer a letter from the Treasury. President reported receiving letters relating to the determination of longitude of places in Australia in reference to the Transit of Venus, the letters to be dealt with by the President. Report of the Newton-Leibnitz Manuscripts Committee approved: a gratuity of 10 guineas to be made to Mr. Rix. Leave given to various applicants to have for electrotypes of illustrations.
