Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Henry Barlow; Thomas George Bonney; George Busk; Edwin Dunkin; Alexander John Ellis; John Evans (Treasurer); Thomas Archer Hirst; William Huggins; Thomas Henry Huxley; John Marshall; Daniel Oliver; Henry Tibbats Stainton; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Robert Mallet, the Very Reverend George Henry Sacheverell Johnson, Dean of Wells, and Henry Sykes Thornton. Report of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Treasurer reported the purchase of £250 consols for the Fee Reduction Fund. The tenandt at Mablethorpe had agreed to continue his tenancy at the reduced rent. Treasurer called attention to the proceeds of the Handley Fund being credited to the Donation Fund, approved. Kew Committee report to be printed in the Proceedings. J. Ball appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee in place of Mr. Bentham. Professor Fower elected a trustee of the Sir John Soane Museum. Leave granted to the Reverend Canon Tristram to copy his paper on the flora and fauna of Palestine. Extension of the time for admission to the Fellowship granted to Dr. Macalister, Mr. Samuelson, Mr. Stoney and Dr. Traquair.
