Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Maitland Balfour; Thomas George Bonney; Heinrich Debus; John Evans (Treasurer); Alexander John Ellis; Michael Foster; Thomas Archer Hirst; William Huggins; Warington Wilkinson Smyth; Henry Tibbats Stainton; George Gabriel Stokes; Edward James Stone; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of John Scott Russell. An extension of time for admission to the Fellowship granted to Professor Liversidge. The Treasurer reported on the purchase of railway stock and was authorised to attach the Royal Society seal to any transfers: he reported that he had not yet met with any ground rents eligible for the Society but enquiries were under way, and he was authorised to complete purchases of ground rents approved by the Estates Committee. The Treasurer authorised to pay bills during recess. Letter from R.R.W. Lingen, Treasury Chambers, 26 May 1882, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: transmitting letters on the deep sea exploration of the Faroe Channel and asking if the Society still intends to press the Government to continue this exploration. Draft letter, George Gabriel Stokes, Royal Society, Burlington House, June 1882, to Sir Ralph Lingen, full text entered into the minutes: emphasising the importance of continuing work commenced in the vessels Lightning, Porcupine and Knight Errant, in verifying Challenger results by exploring the Faroe Channel, and noting the availability of a vessel from the Admiralty, draft approved and ordered to be sent. List of applicants recommended by the Government Grant Committee for consideration of Council: sums granted to each from the Donation Fund. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals, candidates proposed and seconded. Annual report of the Meteorological Council presented. Grants of journals to the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Application from Dr. Sanderson for electrotypes and from Mr. Newall to borrow the original drawing of the Orion Nebula by Mr. Lassell, granted. All book belonging to the Library to be returned by 31 July. Leave of absence granted to the Assistant Secretary. List of bills for payment for advertising, printing and postage.
