Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Risdon Bennett; Thomas George Bonney; Heinrich Debus; Alexander John Ellis; Michael Foster; Sir John Hawkshaw; Thomas Archer Hirst; William Huggins; Joseph Lister; Daniel Oliver; Henry Enfield Roscoe; Henry Tibbats Stainton; George Gabriel Stokes; Edward James Stone; Alexander William Williamson; the Vice-President, Thomas Henry Huxley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Andrew Leith Adams, Sir James Alderson, Francis Maitland Balfour, George Dickie, Stanley Jevons, John Dillwyn Llewellyn, Sir Woodbine Parish, George Kendrick Thwaites, Joseph Liouville and Friedrich Wohler. The Secretary announced that Dr. William Farr had withdrawn from the Royal Society. £2,000 of the £4,000 Government Grant had been received, with £750 of the £1,500 grant for the Circumpolar Expedition. Volumes 2 and 5 of the Challenger Reports had been published. The Report of the Meteorological Council, having been circulated, was ordered to be forwarded to the Government. Correspondence on records of the Toronto Observatory was read and consideration deferred. Letter from the Treasury on the publication of meteorological tables in reports by the Registrar-General for Scotland, the action of the President approved. Letters from the Science and Art Department concerning the Electro-technical Exhibition and experiments at Munich and concerning the Electrical Conference held at Paris, replies approved. Adjudication of Royal Society medals discussed and adjourned. Nomination of Fellows to be recommended to serve on Council in the ensuing year, with a list of retiring Council Members. A request from Dr. Flight for the return of two photographs of meteororites deferred. Application of Dr. Angus Smith on behalf of Dr. Gerland to copies letters of Leibnitz deferred. Letter from Mr. R.S. Newall requesting permission to copy and publish Lassell's drawing of the Orion Nebula, the Secretary to enquire what precautions would be taken to preserve the drawing.
