Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir Risdon Bennett; Thomas George Bonney; Heinrich Debus; Alexander John Ellis; Michael Foster; Sir John Hawkshaw; Thomas Archer Hirst; William Huggins; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Lister; Daniel Oliver; Henry Enfield Roscoe; Henry Tibbats Stainton; George Gabriel Stokes; Edward James Stone; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Correspondence relating to the Toronto Observatory records was read: the volumes of observations now at Kew Observatory to be deposited at Toronto, with the Royal Society reserving the right to recall them for use at any future time. Draft scheme for Dulwich College had been approved and Professor George Carey Foster was nominated as a College Governor to Dulwich College and Alleyne's School. Report of the Standards Committee laid before Council. Leave given for electrotypes to be taken by Mr. Murray, photographs of the Cranbourne meteorite to be returned to Mr. Flight, Dr. Gerland's request to copy Leibnitz letters approved and Mr. Newall to have the loan of the Orion Nebula drawing, having given assurances that it will not leave his possession. Decision postponed on the dates for meetings of the Government Grant Committee and sub-committees. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended for election at the Anniversary Meeting to serve in the ensuing year: the list to be communicated to the public papers by the Assistant Secretary. Nomination of auditors for the Treasurer's accounts. Adjudication of Royal Society medals: the Copley Medal awarded to Professor Arthur Cayley; the Rumford Medal to Captain William de Wiveleslie Abney; a Royal Medal to Professor William Henry Flower; a Royal Medal to Lord Rayleigh; and the Davy Medal to Dmitri Mendeleeff and Lothar Meyer, with a gold medal up to a value of £30 to be struck in duplicate for each medalist. List of bills for payment for printing, lithography and for other expenses. List of salaries and wages for Officers and Royal Society staff.
