Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Ball; Thomas Lauder Brunton; John Evans (Treasurer); Michael Foster; Francis Galton; Olaus Henrici; Edwin Ray Lankester; Joseph Lister; Joseph Prestwich; Osborne Reynolds; Osbert Salvin; Warington Wilkinson Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; Edward James Stone; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of the Archbishop of Canterbury and James Challis. New members of Council made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Appointment of Vice-Presidents. The Treasurer reported the purchase of consols, on account of the Fee Reduction Fund. Seal of the Royal Society affixed to the counterpart license respecting Kew Observatory. Letter from Dr. H.E. Armstrong explaining why he had failed to pay his subscription and asking to be reinstated: his case would be stated by the President at the next meeting. Leave granted to Mr. Lockyer to have electrotypes from the blocks of his paper on total solar eclipses. £100 from the Donation Fund granted to General Cooke to make exterior measurements of the Great Pyramids of Egypt. Reappointment of committees with lists of members: Library Committee; Soiree and House Committee; Estates Committee; Challenger Committee; Circumpolar Committee; Government Grant Committee; Government Grant sub-committees A-D. Dates for summoning the Government Grant sub-committees and the General Committee.
