Commencing with a list of Council members present: Frederick Augustus Abel; William Bowman; William Benjamin Carpenter; William Carruthers; William Crookes; Peter Martin Duncan; William Henry Flower; George Carey Foster; John Russell Hind; Thomas Henry Huxley; John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Henry John Stephen Smith; Balfour Stewart; George Gabriel Stokes; Allen Thomson; Alexander William Williamson; the Vice-President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair, followed by the President, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of the Reverend James Booth, the Reverend Robert Main, and Dr. Thomas Thomson. The paper 'On repulsion resulting from radiation' by William Crookes to form the Bakerian Lecture. The paper 'On the structure of the Stylasteridae...' by H.N. Moseley to form the Croonian Lecture. Treasurer reported the purchase of consols with the £1,000 donated by James Young and that he had received £75 from the Science and Art Department on the Government Fund account. List of individuals and institutions to receive bronze copies of the Davy Medal. List of institutions to receive copies of Mr. Bigsby's Thesaurus. Lists of candidates for consideration in the adjudication of medals, to be proposed and seconded at a future meeting. List of candidates for Foreign Membership of the Royal Socety, six to be put forward at a future meeting for election. Letter from Norman MacLeod, Science and Art Department, London, 12 April 1878, to George Gabriel Stokes, the Royal Society, Burlington House, full text entered into the minutes: asking if the Royal Society could specify which instruments purchased through the Government Grant might enquired after, for future use; the Secretaries to draw up a circular to obtain the information. Reports received from recipients of the Government Grant to be fowarded to the Secretary of the Science and Art Department. Letter from Leonard Lyell, offering to present a bust of Charles Lyell by Gibson, accepted. Leave granted for copying and reprinting of illustrations and papers. Letters of thanks received from Bunsen and Kirchoff for the Davy Medal, and from Du Bois Reymond, Kolbe and Leuckart for elections as Foreign Members. Letter from a committee of botanists in Brussels concerning a memorial bust of M. du Mortier, the Foreign Secretary instructed to reply. A delegate requested to attend a bust presentation on the fortieth anniversary of the professorship of M. Schwann, the Foreign Secretary to reply. List of bills for payment for lithography and colouring of plates. William Spottiswoode to be recommended as President at the Anniversary Meeting of Fellows. The question of a new Treasurer to be discussed at next Council.
