Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Grylls Adams; John Ball; Thomas Lauder Brunton; Heinrich Debus; John Evans (Treasurer); Michael Foster; Francis Galton; Edwin Ray Lankester; Joseph Prestwich; Osborne Reynolds; Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, the Marquis of Salisbury; Osbert Salvin; Warington Wilkinson Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; Edward James Stone; Alexander William Williamson; the President, William Spottiswoode, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Dr. James Young. Report of the Library Committee, noting the completion of the Library Catalogue and recommending the completion of a second supplementary decade of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers. The Assistant Secretary reported that Messrs. Trubner had returned stock of seperate papers from Philosophical Transactions: Messrs. Harrrison to prepare 25 copies, ten for Trubner and Company and fifteen to be stored by the Royal Society. Letter from the War Office acknowledging receipt of the Society's letter on Nile borings. Letters from the Science and Art Department containing particulars of exhibitions. Letter from F. Napier Broome, Lieutenant-Governor of Mauritius, stating that measures had been taken to preserve the giant tortoises of Aldabra. Circular letter from Professor Pickering of Harvard College Observatory, inviting co-operation to form a collection of astronomical photography: the letter to be read at the Society's meeting that afternoon and a copy sent to Nature. Letter from Professor Dawson of McGill College, Montreal, stating that the Royal Society of Canada had been founded: the President had dispatched a telegram wishing success and explaining the delay in responding and was requested to write in more detail. Letter from Mr. T. Burt acknowledging the appointment of W.G. Adams as a safety lamp adjudicator. Lord Rayleigh nominated to join the governing body of Rugby School. Leave granted for electrotypes of illustrations and to excerpt papers. Letter from Professor R. Grant with particulars of manuscripts from his catalogue of stars to be sent in compliance with a request from the Government Grant Committee, referred to Officers. William Crookes appointed to deliver the Bakerian Lecture, On the spectroscopy of radiant matter. The Treasurer reported the purchase of 57 Basinghall Street. List of candidates proposed for Royal Society medals, to be adjudicated at a future meeting. List names of candidates for Foreign Membership of the Royal Society added to the Suggestion Book. List of bills for payment, for printing, lithography and for other expenses.
