Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Grylls Adams; Thomas Lauder Brunton; Heinrich Debus; Michael Foster; Francis Galton; Olaus Henrici; Thomas Henry Huxley; Edwin Ray Lankester; Joseph Prestwich; Henry Enfield Roscoe; Warington Wilkinson Smyth; George Gabriel Stokes; Edward James Stone; Alexander William Williamson; the Treasurer, John Evans, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Dr. Henry S. Boase. Extensions of time for admission to the Fellowship granted to Surgeon-Major Aitchison, Roland Trimen and Dr. David Gill. Dr. H. Newell Martin's paper on variations in temperature and the dog's heart appointed as the Croonian Lecture. Letter from Mr. G. Jinman on a claim of priority, the matter in which the Society could take no action. Letter from the Royal Society of Canada returning thanks. Letter from A.W. Franks expressing thanks on behalf of the Trustees of the Christy Collection for the presentation of ethnological specimens from Timor Laut. Letter from Dr. J. Barrois announcing the establishment of an International Laboratory of Zoology at Villefranche near Nice and asking that the Society should undertake the charge of a table: this to be brought to the attention of Fellows at their next meeting. Annual report of the Meteorological Council was presented. Leave granted for electrotypes of illustrations. All books belonging to the Library ordered to be returned by 31 July and none given out until August. The Annual Meeting for the election of Fellows to be held on 12 June. Leave of absence granted to the Assistant Secretary. The Royal Artillery Library having forfeited Philosophical Transactions volumes applied to purchase copies. The Treasurer was authorised to pay bills during recess. William Huggins's account of cost overruns of repairing the Society's telescope was considered and approved. List of candidates for Foreign Membership of the Royal Society, from which five would be elected at a future meeting. Candidates for Royal Society Medals proposed and seconded.
