DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Grylls Adams; Captain William de Wiveleslie Abney; John Gilbert Baker; Thomas Lauder Brunton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Warren de La Rue; Sir Frederick Evans; John Evans (Treasurer); George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; Francis Galton; Sir William Withey Gull; Joseph Prestwich; Osbert Salvin; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Thomas Henry Huxley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. New Members of Council made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Appointment of Vice-Presidents. Letter from the Treasury enclosing correspondence from the Royal Meteorological Society about a projected marine station on the Firth of Forth: the President requested to communicate with the Treasury on the subject. The Treasurer noted that he had received further bills of charges from the Hudson's Bay Company, relating to the Circumpolar Expedition and had written to the Treasury. £100 to be placed in the hands of Dr. Perkin and £50 placed with Henry Woodward, for the benefit of applicants to the Scientific Relief Fund. Re-appointmemt of Royal Society committees, with lists of committee members: Library Committee; Soiree and House Committee; Challenger Committee; Circumpolar Committee. Appointments to the Government Grant Committee, including ex officio members from other learned societies, as requested by the Treasury: with lists for the Sub-Committees A-D. Government Grant Regulations were discussed and amended, a consolidated code approved, with full text entered into the minutes. Consideration of the report of the Committee to consider the report of Sub-Committee D was postponed.
