Commencing with a list of Council members present: Captain William de Wiveleslie Abney; William Grylls Adams; John Gilbert Baker; Thomas Lauder Brunton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Warren de La Rue; Sir Frederick Evans; John Evans (Treasurer); George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; James Whitbread Lee Glaisher; Sir William Gull; Hugo Muller; Osbert Salvin; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Thomas Henry Huxley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of the Right Honorable Sir Henry Edward Bartle Frere and Alexander Tweedie. An extension of time for admission to the Fellowship granted to Horace Lamb. Letter from Dr. D.C. Gilman of Johns Hopkins University, offering the Royal Society a copy in bronze of the Sylvester Medal, acknowledged with thanks. Letter from the Secretary of the Science and Art Department requesting an opinion on a scheme for an International Committee on Solar Studies, the matter referred to a committee for the purpose. List of candidates for Royal Society Medals, with proposers and seconders. The Foreign Secretary pointed out the difficulty in selecting a high quality nominee for the Davy Medal. List of candidates for Foreign Membership, from which a shortlist was selected: three candidates to be nominated by ballot at a second meeting of Council. The Annual Report of the Meteorological Council was presented. Letter from the President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science requesting that the Society send representatives to their meeting in Philadelphia, with a list of Fellows requested to attend. Letter from Professor R. Grant relating to the Glasgow Star Catalogue, recently published: 30 copies to be allotted to Professor Grant and 25 copies to be sold by Mr. Maclehose, the publisher, who would bear all advertising costs. Report of the Krakatoa Committee with a resolution on non-Fellows joining the Committee, approved, and a further £25 from the Donation Fund granted for expenses. The seal of the Royal Society was affixed to the transfer of £1,000 of Great Northern Railway stocks and to the power of attorney for the sale of New Threes. The Treasurer recommended the purchase of £400 of consols on account of the Fee Reduction Fund. The Treasurer was authorised to pay bills during the recess. The Foreign Secretary presented a letter from the Geological Cabinet of Messina requesting the presentation of Challenger Reports, the reply to be that Council could take no steps in the matter. Leave granted to Professor Haddon to have copies of illustrations. All books belonging to the Library to be returned by 31 July and none loaned out in August. Leave of absence granted to the Assistant Secretary.
