DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Captain William de Wiveleslie Abney; Thomas Lauder Brunton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Warren de La Rue; Sir Frederick Evans; John Evans (Treasurer); Michael Foster; Sir William Gull; Joseph Prestwich; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the President, Thomas Henry Huxley, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Henry Watts. Letter from Dr. David Gill addressed to the President with an enclosure from Professor Foerster of Berlin relating to the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures: correspondence with the Treasury to be continued. Letter from the Foreign Office with a report from Sir John Kirk, Consol at Zanzibar, announcing the arrival of Mr. Johnston at the port and describing arrangements for his journey to the interior. An offer from Mr. Fradelle, photographer, to take photographs of Fellows of the Royal Society declined. Loan of illustrations to Dr. Braxton Hicks and a block lent to Messrs. Clay and Sons. The Treasurer was authorised to procure a new carpet for the Library and to protect portraits with glass for a sum not exceeding £50: he was also authorised to improve sanitary arrangements on upper and lower floors and a cost not exceeding £50. List of bills for payment, for advertising and bookbinding.
