Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Wivesley Abney; William Grylls Adams; John Gilbert Baker; Thomas Lauder Brunton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Warren De La Rue; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; Francis Galton; James Whitbread Lee Glaisher; Sir William Withey Gull; Hugo Muller; Joseph Prestwich; Osborne Reynolds; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the Treasurer [Sir John Evans] in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the resignation of the President [Thomas Henry Huxley] owing to ill health and announcements of deceases of Fellows. The receipt of £2,000 as part of the Government Grant. A letter from Joseph Dalton Hooker as executor of George Bentham. Leave granted to Fellows to re-use illustrations and the loan of a portrait of George Buchanan to the Scottish National Portrait Exhibition. A letter from Edwin Ray Lankester requesting funds for the Marine Biological Association's Laboratory at Plymouth, with a variety of other letters [not reproduced] requesting support. Nominations for Council service are listed. The meeting concluded with an account of payments authorised by the Treasurer.
