Commencing with a list of Council members present: Captain William de Wiveleslie Abney; William Thomas Blanford; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; James Whitbread Lee Glaisher; Frederick Ducane Godman; John Hopkinson; George Downing Liveing; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Arthur Milnes Marshall; Philip Henry Pye-Smith; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William Chandler Roberts-Austen; Edward Albert Schafer; Sir George Gabriel Stokes; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; General James Thomas Walker; the President, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Sir William Henry Gregory and Professor Hermann Franz Moritz Kopp. Report of the Soiree Committee recommending dates for the two annual events with £140 for expenses, adopted with one revision of date. Government Grant Boards to meet on 3 May. £100 from the Scientific Relief Fund to be placed with Professor McKenny Hughes for the benefit of an applicant. Professor Rucker to replace Lord Rayleigh on the governing body of Rugby School. Request for a donation to assist a committee for the erection of a statue of Duhamel de Monceau, declined. Letter from the Russian Consulate-General on a forthcoming Internatiional Congress of Anthropology, Archaeology and Zoology to be placed on the notice board. Leave granted to R. H. Scott to place a box of archives of the Royal Society Club in the apartments of the Royal Society, granted. Leave granted to W. G. Adams for the return of his tables and formulae accompanying his paper on magnetic disturbances at observatories. Report of the Catalogue Committee considered, the proposed conference should not be invited. List of names for Foreign Members from the suggestions book considered and a shortlist drafted, four names to be selected by ballot. Bills for printing and engraving.
