Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Wivesley Abney; William Henry Mahoney Christie; George Howard Darwin; Warren De La Rue; Robert Etheridge; Sir Frederick Evans; William Henry Flower; Michael Foster; Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Hugo Muller; Andrew Noble; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; George Gabriel Stokes; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; James Joseph Sylvester; the Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President [Thomas Henry Huxley] in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the deaths of James Moncrieff Arnott, Peter William Barlow and Henry Charles Fleeming Jenkin. Extensions of time for admissions to the Society for three overseas candidates. Warburton vs. Childs still being heard by Justice Butt. Publication of the Challenger report Narrative v.1. Letters read and discussed from the Science and Art Department, the British Association, the Committee of the British School of Archaeology in Athens. Professor Roy asking for support in studying cholera in Spain. Donation Fund grants to Professor Edward Albert Schafer and Dr Philip Sclater. Agreement to nominate an almoner to Christ's Hospital. Selection of candidates for Foreign Membership made from the Suggestion Book. Mr. James confirmed in his appointment as Clerk to the Society. A letter from Professor Grant suggesting 31 names of persons and institutions to receive the Glasgow Star Catalogue, approved bu Council. Michael Foster given permission to have electrotypes of illustrations from Dr McWilliams' paper. Payment of bills for services.
