Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Wivesley Abney; George Howard Darwin; Warren De La Rue; Sir Frederick Evans; William Henry Flower; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Hugo Muller; Andrew Noble; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; George Gabriel Stokes; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; James Joseph Sylvester; the Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President [Thomas Henry Huxley] in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the death of William Sandys Wright Vaux. A report on the case of Warburton vs. Childs and its consequences for the Royal Society. Nominations for Foreign Members: Adolf Baeyer, Felix Klein, A. Kowalewski and Sven Loven to be put to the ballot at the next ordinary meeting. Report of the Krakatoa Committee read with £50 being given from the Donation Fund. Two allocations of £50 from the Scientific Relief Fund to be used for the benefit of two applicants proposed by the President of the Geological Society. A report of the Prime Meridian Committee. The transfer of funds from the Darwin Memorial Fund to the Royal Society. Letters read from the Foreign Office, the Spanish Minister, Sir William Bowman and the Science and Art Department. Consideration of the procedure for allocation of the Government Grant. Insurance for the preservation of Royal Society portraits. William Crookes to have electrotypes of illustrations. Bills to be paid and Library books to be returned. Leave agreed for the Assistant Secretary. Mr. Johnson's estimate of £16 for a marble pedestal accepted.
