Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Wivesley Abney; George Howard Darwin; Warren De La Rue; Sir Frederick Evans; William Henry Flower; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Hugo Muller; Andrew Noble; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; George Gabriel Stokes; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; James Joseph Sylvester; the Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President [Thomas Henry Huxley] in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the deaths of Thomas Davidson, Lord Teignmouth, Walter Weldon and Colonel Yolland. £2,000 of Government Grant paid by the Treasury. A letter from Dr. Duckworth of the Royal College of Physicians noting the £52 rental due from property in Dr, Croone's will, the 100 years' lease expired. The Society's insurance increased, portraits glazed and frames repaired. The Society's costs paid in the case of Warburton vs. Childs. Purchase from W. F. Dickes of the life model of Faraday by Foley. Transfer of £2,000 of South Eastern Railway Company stock. Mablethorpe tenant Mr. Eve to be refunded £11. An offer by Henry J. Brooks to paint a picture of the Council, turned down. A report of the Pendulum Observation Committee returned for further consideration, General Walker to be added to the committee. A letter from the Midland Union of Natural History Societies read. Dates for Government Grant Committee. A letter from the Chair of the Kew Committee complaining of access difficulties at the Observatory. Letters from C. S. Parker and Professor Roy. Thomas Henry Huxley's announcement that he must resign from the Presidency, citing ill-health - George Gabriel Stokes requested to be nominated for the office. The adjudication of medals adjourned. Nomination of Fellows to Council and retirement of present Council members. Payment of bills.
