Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Wivesley Abney; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Warren De La Rue; Robert Etheridge; William Henry Flower; Michael Foster; Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Hugo Muller; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; George Gabriel Stokes; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; James Joseph Sylvester; the Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President [Thomas Henry Huxley] in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the deaths of Lord Houghton and Walter Flight. Publication of the Challenger report, Zoology v.12. £50 from the Scientific Relief Fund to be placed in the hands of Professor Stokes for an applicant recommended by the President. A report of the Eclipse Committee (1886) recommending expeditions to the West Indies [Caribbean] and Benguela, querying Dr Gill's intentions on observing and noting the need for £1,000 from Government. Access to Kew Observatory and the erection of a gate. Nominations for Council, President and Officers for the ensuing year, including George Gabriel Stokes as President, the list to be communicated to the press by the Assistant Secretary. Nomination of auditors. Adjudication of medals: August Kekule (Copley Medal), David Edward Hughes (Royal Medal), Edwin Ray Lankester (Royal Medal), Jean Servais Stas (Davy Medal). £12 from the Donation Fund to Professor Judd for excavations at Cutties' Hillock Quarry. Electrotype figures from Crookes' paper to Longmans & Company. Permission for Professor Boyd Dawkins to take copies of plates. Loan of drawings for exhibition at the Museum for Natural History, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Salaries paid to officers and staff.
