Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Dewar; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Thomas Henry Huxley; Admiral Astley Cooper Key; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William James Russell; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Arthur Schuster; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; the Treasurer [John Evans]; General James Thomas Walker; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the deaths of Sir Frederick Evans and James Ferguson. Professor Chrystal appointed to the Government Grant Committee. Regulations of the Government Grant Committee to be sent to the Treasury. Two referees appointed to report on the renewal of W. K. Parker's personal grant. The remaining £2,000 of Government Grant paid by the Treasury. A report of the Library Committee. A report of the Pendulum Committee on the publication of Colonel Herschel's observations. A recommendation that £100 should be sent to Dr Gill for an Eclipse expedition from the Cape to Benguela. A letter from the Hydrographer to the Admiralty on a new volcanic island in the Pacific. Access to Kew Observatory. Lord Armstrong's grant to the Scientific Relief Fund. A letter from Madame Wallon on S. Bentham's bequest. An application by W. K. Walker to aid in publication of an illustrated work on birds. Electric lighting for the Society's apartments referred to a committee. A committee established to examine the mode and regulations on publication and what changes might be introduced. Bills for printing and other services.
