Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Dewar; William Henry Flower; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William James Russell; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Arthur Schuster; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; the Treasurer [John Evans]; General James Thomas Walker; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the deaths of Viscount Cardwell, Lord Waveney and Edward Thomas. The grant application by W. K. Parker turned down due to lack of precedent. Two sums of £50 from the Scientific Relief Fund to be placed with Hugo Muller for applicants recommended by him. Annuities purchased for the Scientific Relief Fund. Ludwig Mond contributes £500 to the Scientific Relief Fund and is thanked. A report of the Circumpolar Committee on publication of Fort Rae observations. A report of the Electric Lighting Committee recommends that A. Siemens should inspect plant and recommend satisfactory steps and that £250 be made available to the committee, approved by Council. Government Grant regulations received by the Treasury. A list of Government Grant sub-committees A-D. W. K. Parker's personal grant recommended to continue. Captain Abney appointed as Bakerian Lecturer. The Society of Arts asks for recommendations for the Albert Medal. Access to Kew Observatory. The Statistical Society intending to use the postnominal F.R.S.S., the Secretary asked to write in objection. Permission granted to Professor Prestwich to have extra copies of a paper printed in quarto. Various permissions for electrotypes to be taken. £30 from the Donation Fund granted to W. H. Gaskell. Croonian and Wintringham Trust Funds, some dividends to the Foundling Hospital. Purchase of stock. Bills for printing.
