Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Dewar; William Henry Flower; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Sir Astley Cooper Key; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William James Russell; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Arthur Schuster; the Treasurer [John Evans]; General James Thomas Walker; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: the deaths of T. Spencer Cobbold, William Edward Forster and Edward Solly. A letter from the Admiralty requesting that Total Solar Eclipse expedition observers be picked up by ship from Barbados, not Grenada. A letter from the Foreign Office requesting that Professor Tacchini be invited as an eclipse observer and from the Colonial Office, suggesting that the Governor of Grenada might lend assistance. Candidates for Fellowship election considered and discussion adjourned. Bills paid.
