Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Dewar; William Henry Flower; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William James Russell; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Arthur Schuster; General Richard Strachey; the Treasurer [John Evans]; General James Thomas Walker; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Candidates for Fellowship considered and selected, to be recommended for ballotting at the Annual Meeting in June and the list communicated to The Times. Resolutions of the Eclipse Committee on expedition expenses; £300 to be requested from the Government Grant Committee and £200 from the Donation Fund. Report of the Library Committee on disposal of duplicate books including lists circulated to other learned societies. £25 from the Scientific Relief Fund to be handed to Professor Balfour Stewart to an applicant recommended by the President. The renewed applications of Professor Rupert Jones and H. Tomlinson to the Government Grant Committee deemed to be appropriate; future referees should direct their reports to both Council and the Committee. List of names of those not reporting back on research under Government Grant regulations; these names to be printed with the reports and a letter sent to each. A letter from the Colonial Office stating that instructions had been given to the Governor-in-Chief of the Windward Islands to give assistance to the Eclipse Expedition and that the offer to Professor Tacchini was to be made known to him by the Ambassador in Rome. Letter from the Linnaean Society about the proposed Fishery Department, Board of Trade. Letter from the Edinburgh International Exhibition declining the Halley portait due to lack of space. £50 from the Donation Fund awarded to William Crookes for research on Yttria. An allowance returned to Mr. Eve, the tenant at Mablethorpe. Proposal to contribute to a medal for the jubilee of Professor E. van Beneden. Electrotypes granted to Professor Ferrier. George Kennedy to be instructed to cover hot water pipes in the basement. Bills paid for printing and other services.
