Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; William Henry Flower; Michael Foster; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Sir Astley Cooper Key; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William James Russell; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Arthur Schuster; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; the Treasurer [John Evans]; General James Thomas Walker; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Seal of the Society attached to two transfers of stock. Publications presented: Challenger Report Zoology v.14; and the Meteorological Council's annual report. A letter from R. H. Scott stating that the Fort Rae observations would be published immediately and Scott could distribute; the offer accepted with 150 copies retained for sale or distribution. £50 from the Scientific Relief Fund placed in the hands of Professor Stokes, for an applicant. Arrears of Philosophical Transactions granted. £100 to be placed in the hands of the Senior Secretary, to support Mr Sherrington's researches on cholera in Italy. Proposals for recipients of Copley, Rumford, Royal and Davy medals, with proposers and seconders. Resumed consideration of a report by the Publications Committee, the report being referred back to the committee. Thanks of President and Council extended to the United Telephone Company for assistance at the conversazione. The Treasurer authorised to pay bills during the recess and to expend no more than £25 on portraits preservation. All Library books to be returned by 31 July. Leave of absence granted to the Assistant Secretary. Bills for printing and other services.
