Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Dewar; William Henry Flower; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William James Russell; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Arthur Schuster; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; the Treasurer [John Evans]; General James Thomas Walker; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Sir Charles James Fox Bunbury, George Busk and Frederick Guthrie. President's receipt of an invitation from the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in celebration of M. Chevreul, which could not be acted upon during summer recess. Sale of shares to Sir Joseph Whitworth, on behalf of the Fee Reduction Fund and purchase of consols for the same. Balance of the bequest by George Bentham received for the Scientific Relief Fund, with stock purchased, also for the Fund and the Treasurer empowered to buy another £1,000 of Great Northern Railway stock. Report that five portraits had been glazed and repaired during the recess. Letter from Few & Company on the Stevenson Bequest, seal of the Society affixed to power of attorney. Letter from Mr. Eve, who will quit the Mablethorpe Farm, asking for a deduction of rent; Mr Howard proposing to take over the tenancy and this was accepted. Extension of loan material to the Glasgow Photographic Exhibition. Summonses for Government Grant Committeees issued, with dates. Publication of the Challenger Report Zoology v.15-16. The Foreign Secretary had been unable to journey to Heidelberg to represent the Society owing to ill-health; Sir Henry Roscoe represented the Society and a draft address was approved and ordered to be printed on vellum. Discussion on Royal Society medal awards adjourned to the next meeting. Nominations and retirements from Council. £100 from the Scientific Relief Fund placed in the hands of Professor Stokes, for an applicant. A communication from the Eclipse Committee recommending expressions of thanks for assistance; expenses for the expedition would exceed expectations by around £100 and this to be applied for via the Government Grant Committee. Report of the Pendulum Committee on the publication of Colonel Herschel's observations, a letter to be sent to the India Office. Report of the Meteorological Committee. Bills for printing and other services.
