Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Dewar; William Henry Flower; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William James Russell; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Arthur Schuster; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; the Treasurer [John Evans]; General James Thomas Walker; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of the Earl of Stafford. Nominations list of Fellows for election to Council and Officers for the succeeding year, to be communicated to the newspapers. Nomination of auditors. Adjudication of medals: Ernst Neumann (Copley Medal), Francis Galton (Royal Medal), Peter Guthrie Tait (Royal Medal) Samuel P. Langley (Rumford Medal), Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac (Davy Medal). Report of the Government Grant Committee with recommnedations for awards from sub-committees A-C listed. A grant of £10 allocated to Mr. A. T. Evans from the Donation Fund. Relating to the grant allocated to Mr. J. D. Hamilton, more details on the printing of the proposed atlas requested. Dr. Gill's application postponed, pending a report by a committee appointed for the purpose and the matter should be discussed at the proposed Paris Conference. Letters from Professors Ewing and Tait on grants referred to the Officers. The President to communicate with his counterpart at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on the matter raised by Professor Chrystal at the Government Grant Committee. Letter requesting that plates of the corona taken at the late eclipse shold be given to Mr. Wesley for drawing and engraving, approved. Collection of rents from the Wharton Road property. Few and Company's opinion on the Croonian Trust and lecture, with an extract of a decree of 1728 entered into the minutes. Legal costs of Few and Company to be paid from the Croonian Trust and the balance of accrued receipts for the year should be paid to the Lecturer. Alfred White appointed as Assistant Librarian at £130 per year. Letter of thanks for duplicate works presented to the British Museum. Letters from the Admiralty and the Governor of Benguela on the recent eclipse. Presentation of a work on ancient astronomy and mathematics by Ghazi Moukhtar Pasha, High Commisioner of the Sultan of Egypt. Letter from R. H. Scott on the distribution and expenses of copies of the Fort Rae observations. Letter from the British Association on a Natuonal Standardizing Laboratory. Letters of thanks from newly elected Fellows. Extension of time for admision extended to the Earl of Rosebery. Letter from Admiral Mouchez on a proposed conference of astronomers in Paris, to map the night sky by photography. Electrotype copying requests from various authors. Bill payment for Few and Company and a list of slaries and pensions to officers and staff.
