Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Dewar; William Henry Flower; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Dalton Hooker; Thomas Henry Huxley; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William James Russell; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Arthur Schuster; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; the Treasurer [John Evans]; General James Thomas Walker; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of General Boileau and the Earl of Enniskillen. Address of the Royal Society to the University of Heidelberg entered into the minutes, the Society's seal affixed. A letter from Sir Henry Ponsonby, noting the Queen's approval of the award of Royal Medals. Presentations of books by the French Ambassador and the Minister of the Royal Household in Rome. Request from the Standards Department for the loan of the 1832 hygrometer report. Statement of expenses and a letter from Dr Sherrington relating to cholera research. Request from Dr. R. von Lendenfeld that the Society publish a monograph on Australian sponges, referred to a committee appointed for the purpose. Letter from Dr. Gore on the Jodrell Fund, the response being that he was under a misapprehension. Letters from Mr. C. Weygang and from the Sanitary Assurance Association. £30 from the Scientific Relief Fund placed in the hands of Professor Stokes for an applicant recommended by him. Francis Galton appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee in place of J. Ball. Report of the Publications Committee read and adjourned, the eleven recommendations entered into the minutes. Leave for an electrotype copy of a printing block granted to Joseph Lockyer.
