Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Wivesley Abney; William Grylls Adams; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Warren De La Rue; Sir Frederick John Owen Evans; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; James Whitbread Lee Glaisher; Sir William Withey Gull; Hugo Muller; Joseph Prestwich; Osborne Reynolds; Osbert Salvin; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the Treasurer [Sir John Evans] in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: announcements of Fellows deceases, letters of thanks from medal winners and the Auditors' report. Foreign member nominations are ballotted and Professors Alfred Cornu and James Dwight Dana proposed for election. The report of the Solar Physics Letter Committee is entered into the minutes. A list of ex-officio members of the Government Grants Committee, required by the Treasury, is presented, with a list of Royal Society Fellows nominated to the committee. Membership of sub-committees A-D is also listed.
