Commencing with a list of Council members present: James Dewar; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; the Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the Auditors on the Treasurer's accounts. A report of the Kew Committee ordered to be printed in Proceedings and Staff Commander Creek nominated to the committee. The purchase of £1,000 Great Northern Railway stock for the Scientific Relief Fund. Correspondence between John Evans and William George Armstrong on Armstrong's donation and matching funding for the Scientific Relief Fund entered into the minutes: the total fund of £16,400 was below Armstong's recommendation that the Society should have £20,000 at its disposal and therefore he pledged a further £3,600. Payment of a bill for gold used in medals to Johnson Matthey and Company.
