Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; George Howard Darwin; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Hopkinson; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Bartholomew Price; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Arthur Schuster; Philip Lutley Sclater; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Decease of the Earl of Iddesleigh and Mr. J. A. Phillips. Seal of the Society affixed to an agreement with Mr. Howard for the let of the Mablethorpe Farm and to a transfer of £1,000 stock to the Scientific Relief Fund. Purchase of stock for the Society and for the Gassiot Fund reported. Remaining £2,000 of Government Grant Funding received by the Society. Alexander Macalister appointed to the Government Grant Committee by the Royal Irish Academy. Government Grant Sub-committees A and C to be merged into one. Lists of appointments to Sub-committees A-C, and B, Sub-committee D deferred. Resolution that the Secretary of the Science and Art Department be asked for a list of apparatus and specimens purchased from the Government Grant now deposited at South Kensington and that the Society should be notified of future deposits. Referees appointed to consider grant renewal applications from W. K. Parker and T. Rupert Jones. £20 from the Scientific Relief Fund to be placed with George Matthey, for an applicant recommended by the President. Report of the Library Committee entered into minutes and £200 voted for the continuation of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers. The manuscript of Colonel Herschel's pendulum observations received from the India Office. Letter of thanks from S. P. Langley. Grant of £30 from the Donation Fund made to Professor Humphrey to assist Mr. Lockwood. Letter from Professor [Alexander] Herschel requesting loan objects for exhibition in Newcastle, declined. Letter from H. W. Ridley requesting the loan of a theodolite purchased for the Eclipse Expedition to aid in research at Fernando Noronha, granted. Society of Medical Officers of Health requesting aid in establishing a Bacteriological Laboratory - more details required. Andrew Noble relayed news that William George Armstrong would pay the sum promised to the Scientific Relief Fund by 1 February. Leave for electrotype copies granted to various authors. Arrears of Philosophical Transactions granted to Professor Marshall. Bills for paper, books and other services.
