Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Hopkinson; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Bartholomew Price; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Philip Lutley Sclater; The Treasurer [John Evans];; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Sir Joseph Whitworth. Report on the balance of the Scientific Relief Fund, including Lord Armstrong's donation, and the purchase of stock. W. K. Parker's and T. Rupert Jones's applications for continued Government Grant support confirmed as fulfilling regulations. List of Fellows on Government Grant Sub-committee D. Publication of the Challenger Report Zoology v.17 and Botany v.2. Correspondence with the Treasury on the vote of £500 for the Eclipse Expedition. Letter from the Treasury regarding the provision of a copy of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers to the University of Giessen; the Society's reply that it should be taken from the 250 copies reserved by HMSO for free distribution. Letter from F. A. Abel, full text entered into the minutes, relaying the hope of the Prince of Wales that Fellows would participate in the foundation of the Imperial Institute of the United Kingdom, the Colonies and India and soliciting donations from Fellows; a committee set up to consider the letter and to draft a reply. £10 from the Donation Fund to be granted to Dr. Sclater on behalf of Mr. [John Joseph] Quelch, Curator of the Museum of Georgetown, British Guiana, for obtaining specimens of the young Hoatzin. Dr. Scharff given leave to borrow the illustrations from his paper on Osseous fish egg development. Salary of the Assistant Secretary increased by £30 to £280 per annum. Bills for printing and binding.
