Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Hopkinson; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Philip Lutley Sclater; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Sir Walter Elliot and the Rev. Thomas Gaskin. Italian Irrigation Bonds paid off for the Gassiot Trust and two more purchased. Investments made on behalf of the Scientific Relief Fund by the Treasurer. Costs of the Circumpolar Expedition reported to have exceeded expectations; the difference advanced from the Royal Society's funds on the expectation of repayment from sales of the expedition's report. £25 from the Scientific Relief Fund placed in the hands of Dr Haughton, for an applicant recommended by the President. Report of the Victoria Letter Committee discussed and adjourned. Payment of bills, if passed by the Electric Lighting Committee. Bills for printing.
