Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Hopkinson; Joseph Norman Lockyer; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Arthur Schuster; Philip Lutley Sclater; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of James Whatman. Dates for meetings of the Government Grant Sub-committees A-C, B and D. Letter from John William Dawson, McGill University, to George Gabriel Stokes, 17 February 1887 entered into the minutes in full text: proposing a union of English-speaking geologists, to 'lay a broad foundation of geological fact, classification nomenclature and representation which would ultimately be adopted by other countries'; the President asked to consult with the President of the Geological Society and return to Council with proposals in response. Report of the Soiree Committee recommending event dates and the grant of £100 for expenses, approved. £15 from the Donation Fund to be allocated to Professor Schafer in aid of Mr. J. R. Bradford's researches on salivary secretion. Letter from ther Treasury agreeing to present a copy of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers to the University of Giessen. Salary of the Clerk to be increased by £10 to £160 per annum. Draft report on Sir Frederick Abel's letter inviting participation in the formation of an Imperial Institute. Letter from Michael Foster, Burlington House, to Sir Frederick Abel, 18 March 1887 entered into the minutes in full text: supportig the general aims of celebrating the Queen's jubilee by establishing an Imperial Institute, but declining to launch an appeal for funds via the Fellowship.
