Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; George Howard Darwin; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Henry Gilbert; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Philip Lutley Sclater; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Dr. Wilson Fox. Circular on conversion of India stock. Publication of the Challenger Report, Zoology vols.18-19. £40 from the Donation Fund allocated to Dr. W. H. Gaskell in aid of research into vascular and visceral nerves. Letter from John W. Judd, Hurstleigh, Kew, to George Gabriel Stokes, 30 April 1887, full text entered into the minutes: in reaction to J. W. Dawson's letter, the Geological Society's committee have expressed sympathy with the aim of a union between English-speaking geologists, but that the Geological Society could not organise an initiative; suggests that representatives of Geological Surveys might. The Royal Society resolves that J. W. Dawson should make definite suggestions before action can be taken. Letter from the President of the committee of the International Conference of Celestial Photography, soliciting support to establish an observatory in New Zealand. Communication from Columbia College, inviting attendence at its centenary. Application from the School of Science. Lincoln, for the loan of Sir Isaac Newton's telescope and other treasures, turned down. Application from the Director of the Royal Gardens Kew for the loan of scientific journals, approved. Application from Miss Marie Brown asking for aid in promoting an Icelandic Exhibition: the reply that this was outside the Society's province. Communication from Professor Pickering on the Harvard College Observatory Boyden Fund, to be mentioned at the next Ordinary Meeting. A proposal by Professor J. B. Lawes for the establishment of an agricultural research trust, referred to a specially-appointed committee. Lists of suggested names for Copley, Royal and Davy medals.
