Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; George Howard Darwin; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Archibald Geikie; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Hopkinson; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Arthur Schuster; Philip Lutley Sclater; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Seal of the Society affixed to the address to Queen Victoria on the occasion of her jubilee. Treasurer authorised to expend sums during the summer recess on painting and decorating rooms, not exceeding £120, £50 on electric lights and £25 on cleaning and preserving the Society's portraits. India stock certificate received by the Society's bankers. Seal of the Society affixed to stock transfers. Letters from the Geological Society and the Society of Antiquaries enquiring on what terms the Society might supply electric lighting, referred to the Electric Lighting Committee. £20 to be spent on a guard for the engine, again referred to the Electric Lighting Committee. Advance of £200 to the Kew Committee to be used in building extension and repaid in installments. Letters from Mr. Eve and Mr. Howard, the old and new tenants of the Mablethorpe Farm, including on an allowance for repairs. £40 from the Donation Fund to Mr. Symons for re-determining temperature of the hot springs in the Pyrenees. £92 estimate for a frontispiece to the Krakatoa report, accepted. Leave for S. J. Hickson to borrow an illustration. Thanks extended to the United Telephone Company and to the Royal Horticultural Society for assistance in the conversazione. Letter from a Fellow asking to withdraw from the Society; his subscription be paid in future from the Scientific Relief Fund. Letter from W. H. Wesley asking permission to mention details of the corona seen in unpublished photographs, refused. Letter from Ellis Lever proposing that the Society should award a premium of £500 for a portable miner's safety lamp, referred to a committtee formed for the purpose. Letter from William Huggins suggesting alterations to the Society's telescope, in his observatory, approved at the expense of the Society. Extensions for admission into the Fellowship granted to George King and John Milne. Philosophical Transactions arrears awarded to Sir William Bowman. Treasurer authorised to pay bills for printing during the recess and Scientific Relief Fund payments approved by the Committee. Library books to be returned by 30 July. Leave granted to the Assistant Secretary. Bills for temporary electric lighting and for other services, including 'Miss Woodward - Drawing'.
