Commencing with a list of Council members present: Robert Bellamy Clifton; George Howard Darwin; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Hopkinson; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Bartholomew Price; Charles Pritchard; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Philip Lutley Sclater; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Joseph Baxendell, the Rt. Hon. A. J. Beresford-Hope, Sir Julius von Haast, Robert Hunt, Richard Quain, General Smythe and Professor Kirchoff. Letter from the Colonial Office with letters from the Agent General of Victoria and from the Admiralty, regarding an Antarctic Expedition, referred to a committee set up for the purpose. Letter from the Home Office replying to Michael Foster's on the Society's privilege of approaching the Sovereign by right, the President and Officers to confer with the Home Department. Letter from H. M. Treasury stating that the decision to withdraw from the Comite International des Poids et Mesures had been reversed. Report of the Delta Boring Committee, full text entered into the minutes, recommending discussion of 'the best means of creating an organization which may devote itself to the exploration of the physical monuments of Egypt', approved. Treasurer authorised to draw £500 from the Government Grant Fund. Report of the Dawson Letter Committee; Council to reply to Dawson that they do not wish to summon a conference on the matter of an Imperial Geology Union. Report of the House and Soiree Committee, that budget had been exceeded by £25 owing to the experiment with electric lighting at the Ladies' Night conversazione and the committee applies for that amount, approved. Letter from E. Ray Lankester requesting the use of a room on behalf of the Marine Biological Association, granted. Letter of acknowledgement from Mr, Ellis Lever. Letter from Professor R. J. Anderson and his application to the Donation Fund deferred. Appeals on behalf of a memorial for Sir Charles Shadwell and on behalf of the Donders' Memorial Fund. Dates for summonses of Government Grant Committees and Sub-committees. Archibald Geikie and Alexander Buchan appointed to the Government Grant Committee. Publication of the Challenger Report Zoology vols. 20-22. Report of the Meteorological Council. Awards of medals considered and adjourned. Nomination of Fellows for election to next Council and list of retiring Council members. Bills for printing.
