Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Bowman Brady; Arthur Cayley; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Wesley Judd; Herbert McLeod; William Pole; William Henry Preece; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Arthur William Rucker; Bernhard Samuelson; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Bernhard Samuelson subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Deaths of Arthur Farre and Balfour Stewart. Extension on admission to the Fellowship granted to A. J. Balfour. The remaining £2,000 of Government Grant paid to the Society by the Treasury. Two referees appointed to report on a Government Grant application by W. F. Denning. Letter from the Treasury sanctioning Mr. Buchan as a member of the Meteorological Council and Buchan's acceptance of the role. Letter from C. G. Barrington, Treasury, to the Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office, 3 January 1888, full text entered into the minutes: declining to contribute funds of £5,000 to an Antarctic Expedition proposed in a letter from the Agent General of Victoria; Council to communicate this to the Antarctic Committee. Circular letter on a proosed memorial for Sir Walter Elliott. Letter from the University of Bologna, inviting delegates to an 800-year celebration, consideration deferred. Resolved that Professor W. Kuhne of Heidelberg be invited to give the Croonian Lecture and Mr. Lockyer the Bakerian Lecture, the Secretary to request if the lecture theatre of the Royal Institution might be used for the Croonian. Reappointment of committees with lists of membership: Lendenfeld Committee; Parker Manuscript Committee; Government Grant Administration Committee; and the Antarctic Committee. Applications from Mr. F. A. Dixey and Mr. J. T. Cunningham for a Donation Fund grant and access to Library books turned down. £50 to be placed with Archibald Geikie and £15 with John Wesley Judd for the benefit of applicants to the Scientific Relief Fund. Electrotypes granted to Captain Abney. Bill for printing, cleaning of paintings and other services.
