Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Bowman Brady; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Arthur Gamgee; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Wesley Judd; Herbert McLeod; William Pole; William Henry Preece; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir George Henry Richards; Lawrence Parsons, 4th Earl of Rosse; Arthur William Rucker; Bernhard Samuelson; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The Earl of Rosse subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Deaths of Alexander Robert Campbell-Johnston, George Godwin, Sir Henry Sumner Maine, Professor Anton de Bary and Professor Asa Gray. Alterations to statutes. Preliminary list of names of candidates for Foreign Membership, taken from the suggestions book and from Council, to be selected from at next Council. Dr. William Pole to be one of the delegates to the University of Bolgna celebrations. Letter from Mr. J. Thomson on his proposed expedition to the Atlas Mountains and the Southern Provinces of Morocco, the Society to write to the Foreign Office and to Sir Kirby Green. The Treasurer reported £180 available from the Darwin Memorial Fund and a letter requesting assistance from Professor Haddon for an investigation of coral reefs in the Torres Straits, the matter postponed. Referees appointed to consider the continuing applications to the Government Grant Fund of W. K. Parker and T. Rupert Jones. £50 to be placed with Arthur Schuster for an applicant to the Scientific Relief Fund. Report of the Library Committee read and adopted. A letter from Sir Frederick Bramwell on behalf of the Managers of the Royal Institution, agreeing to the use of the lecture theatre for the Croonian Lecture. Report of the Soiree Committee recommending dates for the conversaziones, with £120 for expenses, adopted by Council. Lists of Government Grant Sub-committees A-C, B and D, with dates for meetings. Leave given to Mrs Jevons to republish a paper by Professor [William Stanley] Jevons. Electrotypes granted to Professor P. G. Tait. Estimate from Drake and Gorham for extending electric lights to the second floor accepted. Bills for printing, to P. Meagher for eclipse expedition instruments and for other services.
