Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir William Bowman; Henry Bowman Brady; Arthur Cayley; David Ferrier; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Joseph Henry Gilbert; John Wesley Judd; Herbert McLeod; William Henry Preece; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Arthur William Rucker; Bernhard Samuelson; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the Investments Committee on Trust Funds and General Funds read and adopted. Report of the Government Grant Committee with lists of recommended recipients of grants allocated by Sub-committees A-C and B, confirmed by Council. Nominations for Foreign Members to be proposed at the next Ordinary Meeting: Edmond Becquerel, Hermann Kopp, E. F. W. Pfluger and Julius Sachs. Suggested names for the award of Copley, Rumford, Royal and Davy Medals, more to be added at a future meeting. The Secretary submitted a new form of election certificate, which was appproved. Leave granted to Rev. G. Henslow and Alfred Sanders to take copies of papers and to have the original drawings. £15 from the Donation Fund awarded to E. Ray Lankester for apparatus to study Medusae. £20 from the Donation Fund to J. N. Langley to assist Dr. Sherrington in research on histology of the nervous system. Application from H. N. Ridley to the Donation Fund postponed. Draft of an address to the University of Bologna, full text entered into the minutes; authorisation for the seal to be affixed and consent obtained from J. C. Adams and William Thomson to act as representatives. Sub-committee appointed to arrange for delegates to the Utrech ceremony in honour of Professor F. C. Donders. Leave granted for copies of papers and electrotypes to be made by A. W. Bennett and C. S. Tomes. Bills for printing and other services.
