DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Bowman Brady; William Turner Thiselton Dyer; Edward Frankland; John Wesley Judd; Herbert McLeod; William Pole; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Arthur William Rucker; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Letter from Major Henry Ponsonby announcing the Queen's approval of the award of Royal Medals. Letters of thanks from Thomas Henry Huxley and the Agent-General of Victoria read. Action postponed on a letter from the headmaster of Eton College, on a vacancy on the governing body caused by Professor Huxley's retirement. Letter from General Walker requesting that Sir George Shuckburgh's scale be sent to the Bureau des Poids et Mesures, 'with the view of determining the length in terms of the standard yard', agreed to, with £12 to defray expenses. Copy of the Fort Rae observations granted to Lieutenant Cannelier. Report of the Government Grant Committee read, with lists of grants recommended by Sub-committees A-C and B. Leave granted to Dr. Frankland to have a photograph taken of the portrait of John Evelyn.
