Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Edward Armstrong; Charles Baron Clarke; Michael Foster; William Huggins; John Whitaker Hulke; John Wesley Judd; Edward Emanuel Klein; Edwin Ray Lankester; Herbert McLeod; Sir James Paget; William Pole; William Henry Preece; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Henry Enfield Roscoe; Edward John Routh; The Treasurer [John Evans]; William James Lloyd Wharton; Alexander William Williamson; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Seal of the Society affixed to stock on account of the Darwin Memorial Fund. All nominees to the Government Grant Boards had accepted their offices, with the exception of Dr. Frankland. Letter from the Society of Public Analysts requesting the appointment of an ex-officio member to the Government Grant Committee, turned down. Remainder of the report of the Library Committee read, including de-accessioning of 112 volumes offered to various institutions, a case to be provided for rare manuscripts and archives at no more than £100, and grants of Royal Society journals to various universities and instititions; all accepted except the case for archives, the decision on that postponed. H.M. the Emperor of Brazil noted via the British Minister at Rio de Janeiro that he wished to complete his set of Philosophical Transactions, agreed. Agreed that in future, cloth-bound copies of the Transactions should be supplied to U.K. institutions. Croonian Lecture to be delivered by Dr. Roux, on inoculation. Bakerian Lecture to be delivered by Professor Thorpe and Professor Rucker, on a magnetic survey of the British Isles. Secretary reported that no official reply had been received by the Treasury, but it was believed that the entire stock of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers would be transferred to the Royal Society; proposed arrangements with publishers, if this was confirmed. Nominations for a Lawes Trust Committee. £25 placed with William Crookes, for an applicant to the Scientific Relief Fund. £20 granted to the Rev. R. Baron for his researches in Madagascar. Request for the loan of Colonel Herschel's bibliography to Columbia University, agreed, provided that the manuscript was safely returned. Letter from S. J. Perry requesting the loan of a photoheliograph to observe the next solar eclipse, granted. Letter from J. P. M. Weale on alterations to Bedford Grammar School, the Society to take no action. Letter from Miss Lough-Bishop, offering the cast of a bust of Professor Forbes, by the late Mr. Lough, accepted. Printing of the list of institutions entitled to receive Royal Society publications to be continued in A and B Philosophical Transactions. Publication of the Challenger Report, Zoology vol. 29. John Ball and Professor A. Macalister re-elected to the Government Grant Committee. Letter of thanks from Ferdinand von Mueller on his Royal Medal nomination. Electrotypes and copies of papers granted to Mr. Lockyer, Professor Windle and Professor Darwin. Bills for printing and engraving.
